Star Fox on Switch 2: Everything We Know — Release Date, Gameplay, and Story Revealed

It has been a while, but he's finally back. Nintendo has finally brought Fox McCloud back into the spotlight, with the company dropping a surprise Star Fox Direct on May 6, 2026, after announcing it just a few minutes before it aired. It includes everything renewed, including a brand-new remake of the Star Fox 64 title for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Titled simply Star Fox, the game is being pitched as a cinematic reimagining of the 1997 N64 classic, complete with a visual overhaul, along with new cutscenes and fully voiced dialogue.
Star Fox Release Window and Price Revealed

Excited for the latest Star Fox remake to come out? Then mark your calendars, as it drops exclusively on the Switch 2 on June 25, 2026. Moreover, the game will be available both physically and digitally, with digital pricing set at $49.99 on the Nintendo eShop.
The physical edition, on the other hand, will retail at $59.99. Players planning to go digital should also keep in mind that the game requires at least 14.8GB of free storage space.
Nintendo has also included several Switch 2-specific features in the video game, with the most eye-catching one being the GameChat integration, which lets players use an interactive avatar styled as Fox McCloud or any member of the Star Fox crew during online sessions. What's even better is how the avatar mirrors the player's own facial expressions and movements in real time.
Gameplay-wise, the game supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, allowing players to use the controller as a mouse for more precise targeting during fights. There is also a co-op control scheme where two players can share a single controller, with one taking the role of the Pilot while the other handles the gunner position.
Decoding Star Fox's Story and Gameplay
At its core, Star Fox retells the story of the original Star Fox 64, where the scientist Andross sets his sights on conquering the Lylat system, and only Fox McCloud and his team of pilots, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad, stand in his way. The narrative, or at least its framework, remains faithful to the original title, with Nintendo greatly expanding the storytelling with all-new cutscenes as well as never-before-seen mission briefings between stages. All dialogue is also now fully voiced.
Gameplay-wise, the game retains its identity as a third-person rail shooter, with players piloting the Arwing through different stages. It will have everything iconic, including the barrel rolls, somersaults, laser blasts, bombs, and more.
To round it out, Star Fox will also arrive with three different modes, with the Campaign Mode offering Easy, Normal, and the unlockable Expert difficulty settings. Challenge Mode tasks players with returning to cleared stages and completing new objectives unavailable in the main campaign. Lastly, the Battle Mode introduces a brand-new 4-vs-4 online multiplayer format.
